At the time of independence, in 1990, there were Masters classes in only six departments, but now with university status, LCWU is offering degrees at graduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. BS 4-year degree program is being offered in 39 disciplines and 5-year Phram-D and Architecture degree are being offered. The University is offering M.A/M.Sc. in 6 subjects and MS/ MPhil degree in 28 subjects. The university is also conducting Ph.D. Programs in Chemistry, Biotechnology, Botany, Zoology, Computer Science, City and Regional Planning, Mathematics, Environmental Science, Physics, Political Science, Education, Applied Psychology, Islamic Studies, Urdu, Punjabi and Fine Arts.

Lahore College for Women University, established in May 1922 as an intermediate residential college, was originally housed in a building on Hall Road, Lahore, with 60 students (25 boarders) and 13 staff members. By 1950, the college had grown to 600 students and was shifted to the present building on Jail Road.

LCWU was affiliated to Punjab University till 1922 for undergraduate programs in 18 subjects. In the next two years, the institution started graduate programs in 14 subjects. Post-graduate classes in English were started in 1940 and Honors classes in five subjects in 1949. B.Sc. Classes were started in 1955 while postgraduate classes in economics and physics were started in 1966. By 1979, Islamic studies, political science and psychology were also added to the growing list of programs.

The year 1990, when the institution was given administrative and financial autonomy, marked a turning point in the history of the LCWU. On 13 August 1999, it was declared a degree-granting institution. The institution was granted the status of Women’s University on 10 September 2002.

The 21st century has brought a great revolution in science which has changed the entire world. Science today is exploring fields that defy imagination. Considering the importance of science in today’s world, LCWU catered to the demand of female students in the area, as it was the only institution offering science subjects at the undergraduate level. This is evident from the fact that the majority of women doctors, both serving and retired, have studied at some stage (F.Sc. or B.Sc.) from the Lahore College for Wome.

Since 1922 the college has proven its mettle as the premier seat of learning for science subjects. Currently Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Biotechnology, Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, Electronics, Environmental Science, Computer Science and Pharmacy are taught at graduate, post graduate and doctoral level.

LCWU is well aware of the importance of the social sciences and the liberal arts as they contribute to the aesthetic sense of human beings and are essential to society. The Department of English, which is more than 70 years old, is the oldest postgraduate department in the university. Founded by Prof. Mrs. U.K. Sirajuddin, it is still rooted in traditions of academic and scholarly excellence. Apart from English, Urdu, Punjabi, Islamic Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Fine Arts, Pakistan Studies, Mass Communication and Gender and Development Studies are being taught at graduate and post-graduate level. LCWU graduates hold positions of moral, intellectual and professional leadership in all areas of national life.

Among its alumni are an extraordinary number of teachers, physicians and professionals in all walks of life. LCWU’s Intermediate College in F.A./F.Sc is affiliated to the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Lahore for the purpose of examinations. This Intermediate College has proved to be a very useful nursery in the province for providing a force for vocational education to women.

Since LCWU’s inception as a university, the institution has strived to improve higher education. MoUs have been established with various national industries and foreign universities in the fields of pharmacy, electronics, environmental science, fine arts, economics, mass communication and gender and development studies.
